Caroline  Brettell

Caroline Brettell, professor of Anthropology in Dedman College, joined the SMU faculty in 1988 after beginning her teaching career at Loyola University of Chicago. She earned her Bachelor of Arts at Yale University and her Master of Arts and doctorate at Brown University. At SMU, she served as chair of the Anthropology Department on two separate occasions as well as dean ad interim of Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences. Professor Brettell was honored with the Faculty Career Achievement Award, the Laurence Perrine Prize for Outstanding Teaching and Research, the "M" Award, the Caren Prothro Faculty Service Award, and the SMU Distinguished University Citizen Award. Professor Brettell was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2017. Her major research focus is the anthropological study of human migration and gender. Professor Brettell is author, co-author/editor or co-editor of 14 books, 2 edited journal issues, 58 book chapters, 53 journal articles, many reviews, given numerous invited lectures, and presented over 50 papers at national and international conferences. She retires as professor emeritus of Anthropology.
